Biography
Biography
I studied fine arts and physics at the University of Buenos Aires, and obtained my Ph.D. in Computational Neurobiology at the University of California, San Diego, where I am now an Associate Research Scientist. I have published work about how neural networks in the brain represent the sensory world, about the cognitive development and neuroscience of music-playing, and about the role of music in science education.
I am the founder and director of Listening to Waves, a project seeking to engage adolescents in the science of music that has reached hundreds of thousands of people through workshops and digital technology. My work has been featured by the BBC; I have collaborated with the San Diego Symphony in a series of concert-lectures about the science of music; and, as a keynote speaker, I have led very large audiences in exploring sounds and making music together.
The development of Listening to Waves allowed me to combine my passion for art, science, and public service, and gave me the opportunity to develop as a creator of awe-inspiring sound experiences. I make those experiences available to the general public through public sculpture, collective performance, web applications, and education.
Artist statement
A hidden world of waves and vibrations.
As a student I took a lab course on the science of sound waves, and fell in love. The course unveiled a world that is both ubiquitous, as we are surrounded by waves and vibrations, and hidden, as we are not aware of them. This unveiling brought a new dimension to my perception of sound and music, increasing my awareness and adding a layer of enjoyment to my life.
The goal of my work is to transmit that love and enjoyment to others. To do this, I tap on the science of waves to create awe-inspiring sound experiences. The experiences integrate the public as playful explorers, and can take the form of sound sculptures, web-applications, or sound workshops where participants can learn about vibrations and explore rare sonic objects and unique musical instruments from around the world.
